What is The Gluten-Free Gang of Central Ohio?

The Gluten-Free Gang of Central Ohio (GFGCO) is a support group based at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  Our group consists of both adults with CD and parents of celiac children, and was formed:

bulletto provide active support to Columbus celiacs and their families;
bulletto share practical information on successfully living a gluten-free lifestyle in the Central Ohio area; and
bulletto educate the lay and medical community about CD.

Mary Kay Sharrett, MS RD LD CNSD, a dietitian with over ten years' experience with celiac disease, assisted in originally forming the group, and continues as
GFGCO's liaison with Children's Hospital.

What activities does the GFGCO sponsor?

The GFGCO meets every other month through most of the calendar year (see the calendar page for currently scheduled meetings).  Meeting topics cover a broad range of issues relevant to the celiac community, and are a prime opportunity to ask questions, share information and ideas, and to support and be supported.

Current projects include:

bullet continuing our extremely successful annual Conferences.  Held in November, we offer a noted guest speaker, smaller workshops on issues related to CD and a great list of vendors selling GF products. The Conference is a full, information-packed day, and is a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other celiacs and taste-test new GF products.  The 2002 Conference was the fifteenth such event held, with over 425 people in attendance.
bullet planning an open house event for local health care providers and their staffs, to educate them about celiac disease and to help them help their patients learn how to live a gluten-free lifestyle;
bulleta group-produced cookbook, as a fundraiser project --the idea is not only to showcase recipes developed and modified by our members and friends, but to include resources such as the techniques and methods of gluten-free cooking and baking.  Our members have amassed a great deal of experience and we're looking forward to sharing that knowledge with the celiac community.
bulletpotentially developing two videos--one on shopping and one on dining out--to show how "real" celiacs shop in regular stores and navigate menus in all kinds of restaurants.
