2004 is the third year the "Making Tracks for Celiacs" walk event will be held in Columbus, Ohio. This fundraising event generates money for local education projects for celiac disease and for research on the condition. Seventy-five percent of funds raised go to the Center for Celiac Research; 25% of funds stays local to further The Gluten-Free Gang of Central Ohio's efforts to educate and provide assistance to health care providers and celiacs in the Central Ohio area. Information on the 2004 event The 2003 "Making Tracks for Celiacs" event What is the Center for Celiac Research? The Center for Celiac Research, based at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, is the first multidisciplinary institution in the United States to be thoroughly engaged in the clinical care, diagnostic support, education and research in celiac disease. The Center's mission statement: "The paramount goal of the Center for Celiac Research is to increase the awareness of celiac disease in order to provide better care, better quality of life, and more adequate support for the celiac disease community." Alessio Fasano, MD, and Karoly Horvath, MD/PhD serve as Co-Medical Directors. Why are the efforts of the Center so important? The Center has already raised over $450,000 - mostly from individuals in the celiac community, not from large corporate donations. The results of the epidemiology study conducted by the CFCR have been crucial in estalblishing how many people in the United States are affected by celiac disease - and this number directly translates into additional funding for research into the causes, treatment and (soon, we hope) an actual cure for CD. We now can accurately demonstrate that CD is not rare - a major step forward. However, the additional research that remains to be done will take time and is not cheap. Please visit the Center’s scientific articles site for more information on current and future research. |
